Because Matilda was gifted, resilient, and likable.  Her parents were jealous.

This is a common problem and drives some parents to child neglect or abuse.

there are a lot of reasons but i guess one could be that they weren't raised well and their parents were more concerned about the men of the house. So they left matilda out of everything...

Because they thought of her as a freak and were too narrow-minded to understand her, she was too intelligent. They should've been proud of her but they seemed jealous and ashamed instead...who knows why. They were so dumb xD
