Why do you think that all the white dwarfs known to astronomers are relatively close to the Sun?

  1. they got cold!


  2. Because they are not the brightest objects in space and pretty small. Astronomers can only know, what they can observe.

  3. White dwarves are small faint stars near the end of their lives. That makes them harder to see the further they get. It doesn't mean there aren't any further away, it just means we can't see them. Compare a candle flame to a spotlight, and imagine how much further away you'd be able to see the spotlight compared to the candle.

  4. might be a luminosity thing.

    they are bright, yet small, so hard to see.
