  1. Mosses are found only near damp areas because the do not have vascular tissue... the primary components of vascular tissues are the xylem and phloem. These two tissues transport fluid and nutrients internally. There are also two meristems associated with vascular tissue: the vascular cambium and the cork cambium. All the vascular tissues within a particular plant together constitute the vascular tissue system of that plant.

Without vascular tissues, moss can't save up water, so it has to grow near water to get the proper supply of water. :)

    Hope I helped!

  2. wheres the moss hahahaha

  3. Mosses don't have true roots. That means their 'roots' can't transport water or nutrients. They only have 'roots' to fasten themselves to the ground. They need to stay in damp places because they need to exchange gases with water through diffusion.

  4. Mosses are Bryophytes, which means they lack vascular tissues ( xylem and phloem which transport liquids, and the associated tissues which increase rigidity), they lack cuticles (waxy layers that can prevent waterloss),.Also see answer above about reproduction

  5. They are not just found in damp places. Only some of the mosses are stuck there.

Anyhow, one of the features of most mosses and ferns is that they have a stage in their reproductive cycle where they need a wet environment to breed(have s*x).

For rock mosses this can be as brief as a sudden thunder storm or dewy morning and the plant might survive complete drying between rare storms.

"Mosses preserve the primitive method of sexual reproduction in plants. Moss plants are usually either male or female, although some produce both types of s*x organs. The males produce biflagellated sperm that must swim through a film of water to fertilize the ovum hidden in the archegonium of the female plant. The moss plants that produce the gametes (either eggs or sperm) are called gametophytes and have a single set of chromosomes in their cells."

  6. You question is invalid. There are about 15,000 species from the Artic to Antartica, North America alone supports 1200 of them, all in different environments.

I suggest you take a look at the book Moss Gardening by George Schenk.

  7. because the damp places are usually the places with less exposure to sunlight.  Some plants simply don't do well with direct sunlight. Moss likes the moisture and the higher humidity.

  8. because there such tiny plants that they can dry out very quickly since there isnt much water contained in the plant or the small rooting system, they require a lot of water to provent them from drying out and dieing. they are present in dry conditions but only grow substancially and successfully in damp conditions.

thought this was a religious question when i first saw the words Mosses. lol and was slightly confused. lol
