  1. It's a good question.  I was just saying to my husband the other day how it's funny that EVERYONE will watch the Olympics.  They'll watch swimming, track, gymnastics, etc.  But, just try to see any of those sports any other time on TV.  They just aren't shown.  So why is it so popular once every four years but not at any other time?  Hmm.

  2. your right, people i know who hate sport love watching the olympics. i think that its because of a few reasons sport haters dont hate it because its only once every 4 years and it has so much hype, plus their is national pride and getting behind your country. I think that it also has a great range of sports that arnt usually broadcasted on tv like gymnastcis, diving and athletics so its exciting to see these sports. i think its also exciting to see all the other countries, and the talent that they have in their given fields.

  3. It is the highest level of competition

and you see the whole range of human emotion that is the same all over the world

plus you get to root for your Country as a whole and you feel like they represent you

    In some events

It is the human race pushing itself to the limit of human capability

I think the olympics are fantastic, except for all the Judged competition, it should be direct competition only

  4. The Olympics represent human achievement and strength of will and determination and teamwork. It's about defying the odds. When we watch these guys go out there and give it their all, we can relate to their struggle even if we're not capable of it ourselves. It's the reason why we as humans tend to support the underdog most times - we enjoy seeing challenges overcome just as much as the athletes enjoy overcoming them. We enjoy watching movies with these themes, so it should be no surprise that we will enjoy these themes when applied to real life.

When someone breaks a record, it reflects on all of us. It shows us all that we have more potential than we know.

  5. because its a competition held once every four years...and this is just an example, maybe a dumb one, but if you only get to see your mom every 4 years you'd be pretty excited wouldnt you?

  6. international competition across a diverse array of sports not otherwise seen...

  7. It's probably because it isn't about the sport or even the athlete but about the country they represent and the team they work with.

  8. 1. Excitement (Michael Phelps and the 4 x 100 m relays--the best swimming race I've ever saw)

    2. World Records (Michael Phelps/Swimming/Usain Bolt)

    3. Learn another culture

    4. Cinderella story

    5. Country's firsts (Mongolia or Afghanistan's first medals)

    6. Feeling of happiness and sadness when your team wins or loses respectively

  9. True. I am not into sports. I don't watch NFL, NBA or whatnot but I am following Olympics. I guess it's because it is a gathering of different countries and seeing different peoples. There is a feeling of connection.

  10. Because they're awesome. I don't follow sports either, but I love the Olympics.

  11. I used to enjoy the olympics when it was amateurs. Professionals, money and doping has spoiled it all.
