Why do you think we keep cheering for our teams?

This was just something that popped into my head last night as I watched an excruciating 9 run top of 7th from Detroit.

Chris Davis went out and hit a 3 run homer to give us the lead and immediately our pitchers lost it in fantastic fashion.

So, I was really mad and upset, and I was in a crappy mood anyway cause I was worried about Ian Kinsler, and I just thought, "Why do I put up with this?"

Of course, right after, I felt bad for being that way about my team, and I know I cheer for them because I love them and want them to do well... And to my credit, I didn't immediately change the channel, though I considered it. I stuck it through and watched the entire 11-3 loss.

I know I cheer for the Rangers because they're a great team that never gives up, and they know how to play the game the right way. And my nature doesn't allow me to just give up on them.

But what is it exactly that keeps you cheering for YOUR favorite team?

  1. The same reason as you. I cried when I heard about Kinsler. I still hold out hope but at their current record it's getting hard to watch when they've been getting the living daylights beat out of them.

  2. We cheer for our teams because we are true fans of our teams.  Through thick and thin, win or lose, we follow our teams.  I understand what you're saying.  I love my Phillies even though they end up breaking my heart most of the time.  But I keep rooting for them because that one day will come when I can say, world champions, once again.

  3. I'm always staying in the ninth inning because I know anything can happen. The excitement during the game just keeps me going. I learned my lesson a couple of years ago during the LLWS, when Hawaii was facing Curacao. Hawaii was down 6-1 in the bottom of the 6th so I turned on the TV. The next day, I learned that that game became one of the greatest games in the history of the LLWS, with Hawaii coming back to win it on a walkoff home run. Now I'll stay through the whole game just because it makes me giddy even if players just get walked.

  4. Well, you continue to cheer for them and keep your loyalty on their side, instead of being a bandwagon fan cause you gotta stick with your team through whatever happens. You're lucky your Rangers can even hit. My Giants probably don't have that kind of bat, but I still stick with them, hoping one day they'll be successful.

  5. I know how u feel. After last night's Yankee loss to the Jays i was pretty pissed off & was ready to give up on them this season. But the reason i cheer for the yankees is b/c i been a fan of theirs for 30 yr ears. In the good & bad i have supported them b/c they have given me alot of wonderful memories that i will remember for the rest of my life. I will die a Yankee Fan b/c i also love them & want them to succeed.. I'm also a loyal fan not like many Bandwagoners today who switch teams every year.

  6. Nice question btw!

Well i think its because we all have faith and love and support for our team very much. Even though the team does bad fans know that the sport of baseball is really unexpected and that bad can all of a sudden become good. When my team slumps it gets frustrating but i stay positive I have always been an optimistic person. To be honest with you I, as a person and an Angel fan, (i am 15 years old) have never experienced a down right HORRIBLE season. I have though experienced really BAD post season games if that counts for something. It gets me frustrated and upset but i just suck it up and can't wait for the new season. I think its motivation kind of if that makes any sense. I've always had some sort of admiration for fans who stick by their team even though the ballclub hasn't been doing that well for several years.

so we keep on believing ^^ its always a BLAST when you hear a cinderella story i.e the Rays, the rockies last year because finally after all the bad there is finally a good :)

  7. Well, I am a Boston Red Sox fan and it sure gets a h**l of alot easier to cheer when you got 2 World Series Titles in 4 years. But seriously, I really enjoy watching my team play win or lose. If you can't handle the good with the bad then you're probably not a true fan. I believe if a team is your favorite team, then you support that team.

  8. Loyalty, respect and admiration for the team I grew up watching that made me want to play centerfield and wear #17 to be half as good as Kirby Puckett

  9. Loyalty. Pride. Determination.

That's what keeps me a fan of my sports teams. I couldn't imagine not being a Yankees fan. They were the first team I rooted for in sports. I rooted for them through the not-so-stellar 1980s, the dreadful 1990 season when they finished in last place in the American League (95 losses) and I was giddy as h**l when they started to win again in the late '90s.

I've endured late-inning games to the point that I've fallen asleep at work the next day. I've kept the TV on when they've been blown out and had no chance of winning. I listen intently to the radio to day games while driving. It's this great loyalty to my home city and that lovely Pinstriped team that keeps me watching. And will keep me watching.

I don't waver at all. Yankees today. Yankees tomorrow. Yankees Forever!

  10. We think that our teams can be successful or make great comebacks. It's pretty painful to know when your team's about to give one up. As a Cardinal fan, I've felt that a lot this season.

  11. Anyone can be a fair weather fan. You cheer for your team because you love them. And the rough times make the good times that much better to celebrate.
