  1. 99.9% of colleges have requirements.  These requirements have to do with the college being able to receive governement aid..or financial aid companies (and government grants) to "acknowledge" them as an accredited college.

With that said...if they want $$ and to be seen as an accredited college, then they need to have the requirements that the governement and other agencies ask for (many of times this just comes down to the number of hours you spend in the classroom...which is probably the best answer I can give you as to all those "other" courses.

  2. It helps you to diversify your interests, plus it helps keep skill in practice that you will still need in the real world.  Comprehensive reading and intelligent, professional writing are requirements for any job higher on the ladder than burger flipping.  Likewise, the ability to manipulate numbers helps in just about any job, as does a knowledge of at least basic science.

  3. Some students need the extra couple courses to figure out what they want to study in college. Also, it allows everyone to be on the same higher level education status.

Some of the courses are absolutely pointless and have nothing to do with your field of study, but the university/college requires it. For example, I took History of Spain 1100AD-Present ... the class, was taught 100% in spanish. The degree I was earning was Special Education. (so tell me how relevant learning how to speak about the history of spain in spanish to special needs individuals ... I still can't figure it out.)
