Why do you tip, or don't you?

ok, you go for food, or a coffee, or a snack, why do you tip, or if you don't tip , why dont you. do you tip for service, dont forget the person serving you is being paid, are you tipping because the food/ drink was good,which it should be, are you tipping because you want better service next time you order, are you tipping because it makes you feel good (about yourself), are you tipping because you belive the employer don't pay the employee enough, or what, and if you dont tip............. why

  2. I personally tip people base on how well they serve and their attitude. But if you're a guy taking a girl out it seems like the gentleman thing to do.

You are very ungrateful to those who work their butts off to feed their children and pay the bills to keep their electric on and a roof over their heads.  Servers only make $2-$3 an hour and after taxes, your looking at a $20 paycheck, so I suggest if you don't want to tip, stay home and cook your own food.  And also, servers are required to tip out a percentage of their tips to the bartender, hostess, busboy and foodrunner if there is one.  Don't be so selfish.    You know, it's normally the people with money who are so cheap.  Do you really think people just wait tables because they like it?  Some people are not so fortunate to have had a family who could afford them a college education.   So waiting tables is generally the only other way to make decent money and they run their butts off trying to make people like you happy hoping they get a decent tip only to be dissappointed in the end.  Seriously, you only deserve to eat at Burger King and McDonalds since you obviously haven't a clue about the hospitality industry.

  4. I tip when I have great service. I will always leave something because I understand people in those positions make a living off of their tips (I used to work in a tipped position and know many who still do). I do not tip based on the food because it is virtually out of the servers control.The better the service, the greater the tip. It's that simple.

  5. I don't tip and if I do it is very little.

    The reason is, I used to work in a kitchen I therefore hate waiteresses.

    The complain and whine about their jobs but often they would make my weekly salary in one night, and I had to work hard while they just stood around and flirted with management.

    ADDED: YES SERVERS, FOR THE DURATION OF THE MEAL YOU ARE MY OWN PERSONAL SERVANT THATS WHAT I PAY YOU FOR !!

  6. I usually leave a little tip. I dont beleive in the 15-20% tip which they recommend. I base it on how the waitress was. I dont base it on the price of the food. I mean what difference is it if they bring out a $20 steak or a $5 hamburger and fries. They do the same amount of work. If they dont come back around and ask if I need a refill I wont leave a tip. So if I got a steak they expect me to leave a $3-4 tip when a burger would be$.75. What sense does that make. Isnt it supposed to be tipped on the service you receive? Not the price of food. It dont make no sense to me. I usually give them $2-3 for our family when we eat out. If the server is good, if not, nothing. Thats it. I dont think about that they only make $3 an hour and they rely on their tips. If thats the case, go get a job that pays more. You know what you make before you take the job and if you dont think its enough, find something else. You cant rely on the tips to get by.

I always tip 20% even if service is bad, because I feel guilty that these people only make like $2-something an hour, but really, I should be more discriminating in how much I tip, because I've gotten some really bad service. If I can see somebody's trying their best, even if they make a mistake or two, as long as they are nice and correct it, it's no big deal. What I absolutely cannot stand is someone who gives me attitude or is lazy or ignorant.

    BUT: I absolutely refuse to tip anybody who just stands behind a cash register with a tip jar out - or to tip for take-out food. If you don't bring whatever it is to the table, you don't get a tip. This means you, Starbucks. Starbucks even goes so far as to have a tip jar at the drive thru window, which is crazy. Furthermore, I know for a fact that at this one donut shop I go to, the manager/owner confiscates anything you put in the tip jar at the register, so the person who rings up your order doesn't get a thing.

You tip according to service..... your server has to  know the items on the menu from left to right and top to bottom like a religion, not just asking you what you want, bringing it to the table and taking it away when you done......more like making sure you have a good experience while you consume the product. Servers just work there but that doesnt mean that they pay them to have an opinion or be nice, thats what separtes bad service from good service........so next time remember......they are servers not SERVENTS!!!!

  10. i usually tip because the person is working hard and wants to provide good service. the majority of their pay is form tips so i help out a little. but if service is crappy they will get no tip. but if serviec is good my minimum tip is usually $20 where ever i go as long as the food total is over 50.

Robin, this is a tough question... most of all due to the obvious, everyone has a different reason for why they tip.  Being that I personally have been in the "service industry" for quite sometime and have been employed within several aspects of the entire entity known as "restaurant/bar/lounge", I feel as though I have a a bit more than average knowledge of what is right and wrong with the system and idea of tipping in this country, I will, however, try to sum up my feelings...   Overall people should tip (that's if they want to be rendered a service/product that they are too lazy to produce within the comfort of their own home), specifically, I believe the tip relies on the entire "experience"... not due to pity, cattiness, not only for the food nor the sole taste of the gazpacho... BUT for the entire experience.  I know it probably sucks to read such words, especially for those that have had a bittersweet experience within the realm of receiving tips, but its true.  Any guest or customer RECEIVING SERVICE should not be bogged down with the guilt-ridden anxiety of such questions as: "Should I tip, service sucked, but... "  OR "The food was crappy, but..."  Its give and you shall receive AND of course everyone has their own idea of a "perfect experience"... truth be told I have quit jobs because the food sucked at a place or quit because the management sucked and/or I needed a new place with a higher check average to make the amount of money I thought I was worth.  

    All in all, most people know the deal, people in the service industry make c**p per hour and so tipping is not only  the basis of one's earnings it usually is what is relied upon...

    For those recieving crappy tips, get a new job.

  12. I always tip at least 15% unless the service is really bad.  They get paid less than minimum wage b/c they are assumed to get tips.  Now stop being cheap b/c maybe someday you'll have to take a job that gets paid in tips.

  13. I tip in different places in different amounts. Having worked as a waiter and barman tips can be a vital pat of your income.

    It is important that your tip gets to the person who serves you, not the owner. In NYC double the TAX, in Greece add 10% etc.

  14. I usually tip double the tax (it comes short sometimes) but it works for me. I have heard from a friend that most wait-staff earn  less than minimum wage and make most of their dough on tips. And for me it's like Karma, cause I wouldn't want the person who waited on me to be like "there's that guy that stiffed me, last week. I'm not taking him."

  15. Society establishes what services are tipped/not tipped.    Those you should be tipping are paid accordingly, usually about 2 dollars an hour to compensate out the tips.

      If you do not tip in a place that tipping is expected, you will be remembered if you frequent the establishment. The staff will be brisk and rude.  You will not get good service. None of this will be by accident.

      You will get your food dropped on the floor then replated and brought to you. Your bartenders will forsake you for all others even if you were there first and will make you weak watered down drinks.  You will get your drink spit in.  You will be referred to as "that fat ***** who never tips" by all employees there, even the management who will NOT care when you complain about your S****y service because that is what you deserve.  

    To Insure Proper Service.  TIPS.  

    If you don't do it, don't expect to get it.

  16. I always leave about 2 bucks at the least but when I have had great service I have left up to 10! Being a server for a few years I know how hard it is sometimes to make ends met and to live off of tips. In my state servers only make about 2.13 and hour so sometimes if it is a slow day and you dont make any tips then it sucks. I was always super nice to my customers no matter what kind of day i was having that way I could make more in tips!

    I know a lady who was a server at night, raising 3 kids on her own, and doing work study at her school to help pay for tuition while she was in Nursing School. I had met her thru a friend and I knew how bad of a situation she was in and I was sure that any money could have been appreciated, so when my boyfriend and I went in to get food one time we asked for her and we left her a 10 dollar tip. Of course she was an amazing server, and she had to be, she needed the money!

  17. I will not tip for bad service- ever- I was a waitress for 3 years during college and I know MANY out there stiff on BAD service!

    But common in Oregon the min wage is over $7/hr

    I can understand if they are being paid $5/hr but they get PAID what they earn

    A tip is a Thank you of service- not a guarantee or requirement

  18. Remember the person serving you is being paid....But not very much. Not nearly enough to live on without tips. Usually less than $3/hr. You tip for service. If the food was bad, that is the fault of the kitchen, not the server. If you tip well for bad service because you want better service next time, they just think everything was fine and don't get better. You should always tip according to the service received, keeping in mind the circumstances in the restaurant on a given night. Was it excessively busy? Were they short-handed? And a good server is not necessarily one who avoids all problems, but one who handles them correctly when they arise.
