Company's always ask this question. It is important to know something about the company before an interview. Today the Internet is a great source of information for this if the company is at all listed. Have this answer at your fingertips when you walk in. As to why? They are interested not only in you but what you intend to do for them. Worst answer I ever heard given at a job interview no kidding this really happened. The interviewer asked the applicant how long she intended to work for the Company. The applicant said to the interviewer, until you fire me.  Good Luck Getting That Job  Bob
