  1. To get guys to pay to watch.  :D

Well...technically playing in pants.... would only cause unwanted friction... so i assume the shorts are the best bet.  What i can't understand is why they have to be so tight?  i mean...as a guy.... haha i love 'em.  But they dont seem necessary.  Gym shorts would probably be just as effective and more comfy?

  2. Because clothes are considered to be part of your body.  If you or your clothes touch the net, that is a violation.  That is why you don't want to wear clothes that are too baggy or I guess in your case, shorts that are too big.

  3. because otherwise no one would watch

  4. OK, to get a "real" answer, let's take a look at the actual shorts.

Most players are wearing what are called compression shorts.  They're tight enough to provide some support to the upper leg muscles, but not so tight so as to cut off blood flow.

And, they're not all that short.  Longer shorts could cause some circulation problems, so my (somewhat educated) guess is that the clothing manufacturers have done some research on this and determined what the optimal length is.

Back in the day, girls used to wear a type of short called "bunhuggers".  There was no inseam at all in these shorts; basically they resembled a pair of girls underpants, although they were made of cotton and nylon.  THOSE were short shorts!!  Also, they were not very flattering if you did not have the right body type.  If you had a big butt or heavy thighs, well.....it was not a pretty picture.

  5. so you can move faster and more comfortable

  6. not all player wear shorts on volleyball some wear bikinis
