Why do young people act like they will never get old?

They laugh about old people, make fun of them and it never occurs to them that they will be old someday???

It's always been like that.

That's the way it's always been.  A young person thinks they will live forever.  Most of them don't think about the future.  

Some don't "grow up" until it's too late and the consequences of their actions are more than they can handle.

Old age is so far off for them that they can't conceive of it ever happening to them. They find out too late that the time of youth is very short and they will probably end up living most of their life as an "old" person -- middle aged and up.
