Cuz of tones of veins in them & they get irritate cuz ur tears are made of a salty solution.

because when u cry you put pressure on ur eyes, and this increases the blood flow in ur eyes, which makes them red. when u stop crying, blood flow is back to normal and thus, your eyes are back to normal again.

The skin on and around your eyes becomes irritated from the salt of the water. Also by the constant rubbing and whiping most people do to get rid of the tears.

Same effect when you swim in the ocean and your eyes sting.

Also, crying not withstanding, people tend to rub their eyes to wipe away the tears.. this speeds up the red-eye process.
