Straight from NASCAR.com:

NASCAR announced Wednesday that Chad Walter, crew chief for the No. 5 Chevrolet driven by Landon Cassill, has been fined due to a rule violation during the Nationwide Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on June 28.

Walter was fined $10,000 and remains on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 due to violating Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing: use of improper language by the crew chief during a televised interview of the race) of the 2008 Nationwide Series rule book. Walter originally was placed on probation in February, because of rule violations at the season-opening event, at Daytona International Speedway.

Additionally, Rick Hendrick, owner of the No. 5, was penalized with the loss of 25 Nationwide Series car owner points while Cassill was docked 25 Nationwide Series driver points.

So am I reading this right? Why should they penalize Cassill for what his POed crew chief said?

  1. I know! It's pretty lame actually.

  2. because if the crew chief knows his whole team will be hurt by his own actions hel be less likley to do something stupid

  3. Because(unlike some people think) NASCAR is a team sport and in team sports, the whole is affected by the individual ;)

  4. I think its falls in line with the whole crew chief being held responsible for the team thing.....

  5. The penalty is a team-wide penalty in all instances.  When a crew chief is penalised for car infractions, driver and owner points are penalised.

In this case, NASCAR was consistent.  There is a 25-point penalty for driver Cassill and "listed" owner Hendrick;  this team is owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

The point penalty is consistent with NASCAR's language crackdown.

  6. exactly they should give all the fines to the crew chief not cassill and hendrick what did they do?

  7. thats all in the gray area of the rules book that no one can see

  8. it sucks but that has been what they do fine the crew chief, penalize the owner, and penalize the driver no matter who did something... i dont know how long they have been doing that but that is the most common penalty
