Why does America still have one cent coins when they are nearly worthless nowadays?

Look at how items are priced in the stores here. Does it make sense to price an item like this : $1.99...$1.59 etc

I think what will ultimately end penny production and use is when no material to make a decently sturdy coin is less expensive than the penny it would yield.  

It already happened once with pennies about 10-15yrs back - they had to change the metal compound that constituted the coin - it was costing nearly 2 cents to make a penny.

They make good washers if you drill a hole through the middle.

Put two or three dollar's worth in an old tube sock and they make a great weapon.
