In 1988 I was part of the the program 'Soviets meet Middle America'. I thought the Cold war was over and we can be friends. I visited LA, Florida, where I met navy oficers at Pensacola navy base. They all were nice guys. What happened after that? It appears we are about to start a new conflict.

  1. russia is still a potential super power and so u.s.a. fears.

  2. Maybe because of their behavior or maybe because after we help them with their economy they still see us as their enemy or maybe because we can not trust them. tell me do you trust them, they say one thing and do the other.

  3. The ideology of both countries are totally different----one

embracing communism, the other capitalism. Even though

the USSR is no longer there, the different still exists perhaps. Like India and Pak , they will never come together on terms. Individuals like each other, but countries with their political agenda remain enemies.

  6. Both countries have opposing political views and on the world stage, both countries have different agendas. Both countries have different sets of allies. Different goals and approaches to their own needs.

In recent years I have looked at Russia favorably. This show of force while understandable is a bit too much. I can see and understand why Russia wouldn't want NATO missiles in Georgia aimed at Russia. That is where I feel the USA is wrong and wrong as well with missiles in former East Block countries.

  7. Israel is heavily involved with Georgia, including the sale of advanced weapons to Georgia and the training of the Georgian army's infantry forces.

It's not commonly known in the U.S. because major media do not report it. (Surprise surprise.)

  8. Why not ask Mr. Putin why this is.  He seems to want to return us all to the relationship we had during the cold war.

  10. In 1988 I was in the Navy and on Subs, I can tell you that the Cold War was not over.  You have to understand, politicians start wars, the regular people who you met were nice because we Americans are like that, unlike what the rest of the world thinks.

Putin is old school KGB and this invasion of Georgia was sent to show that they (Russia)can still project force to secure their interests in that region of the world.  It was not a peacekeeping mission but a demonstration of power and an attempt to reassert control over the region.

  11. Imperialist empires naturally don't like each other. Russia was weak for a while and that made them a bit friendlier. With Putin likely to stay in power another 30 years, the worst can be expected. Elect McCain and you will find out how escalation works.

  12. the truth is georgia is seen as a foothold to russia the truth is that we are very cautious of russia, and we see georgia like we see israel to the middle east or japan to the far east.
