  1. Any country on earth has volunteers. Like other countries, Australia has volunteers because:

-- sometimes, a volunteer is better to undertake a task than a paid person. For instance, in many domestic violence shelters, the women there want to talk to people who have been in a situation similar to theirs, who are helping not because they are being paid but because they are motivated by their understanding of the situation

-- volunteers don't have a financial interest in the organization, and therefore have the freedom to criticize and challenge, and also can talk to the press or government officials about an organization and not be seen as someone whose livelihoods are tied to the organization

-- people want to engage in activities that aren't tied to paid work. Ask a long-time volunteer if he or she would like to be paid for his or her work, and they will often reply, "But that would ruin the experience because then it would be a *job*"

  2. There are a lot of people who are either retired, unemployed, housewives/dads  and kids who like to get involved with people, they get to meet people of different cultures etc. It gives many volunteers a sense of worth. Take the Sydney 2000 olympics we had thousands of volunteers as an example. Even  the Sydney Royal Easter show has volunteers. They are People who love people and where would we be without them. They are worth their weight in gold.

  3. for all the dole bludgers who have nothing better to do with their time.

  4. charity means love, love is free. but offen rejected.
