First off, that's all he knows. He has it in his blood, and can't accept that his age is going against him. Soon he'll have to realize (not in his heart but in his body) the ride is over. He also can't accept being put to the pasture.  His alternatives, Coaching, sports broadcasting, or riding his tractor. whatever he decides i think it's been a good ride. He's given something to the sport every other player wishes their ride can be as long.

he only came back once out of retirement.  other than that, he considered retirement, but never did retire.  so the question is "incorrect."
