Why does COSTCO accept VISA, MC, and Discover online but does not accept them in-store?

  1. less overhead cost?  Credit cards charge the merchant a percentage of the sale.  However, online transactions don't require the use of actual, physical machines to process credit cards. so the percentage would still take effect, but not the maintenance of the card readers.  

    No COSTCO in this area, but perhaps they have their own store credit card and are trying to drive sales of their own card.

    Just a guess...
