We have several different sets of nerve ending types in our skin. One is for pain. Another type detects cold. A third, heat. You can map out each type separately, using a needle, a cooled metal rod, or a heated metal rod. They each are treated differently in your brain, which makes all cold nerves seem similar, etc.
