  1. Actually, it is scientifically called homo cro-magnons. Physically the same as us, just stupider.

  2. The first remains were found at Cro-Magnon, near Les Eyzies, France. Hence the naming.

Homo Erectus was found near and named: Peking Man, Java Man, and Heidelburg Man. He wasn't homo sapien and received the name he has now.

Neanderthals were first found in the Neander Valley of Germmany. "Man of the Nander Valley" explains the name origin. His formal name is "Homo neanderthalensis."

"While the Cro-Magnon remains are representative of the earliest anatomically modern human beings to appear in western Europe, this population was not the earliest anatomically modern humans to evolve. The skull of Cro-Magnon 1 does, however, show the traits that are unique to modern humans, including the high rounded cranial vault with a near vertical forehead. The orbits are no longer topped by a large browridge. There is no prominent prognathism of the face."

As for the name Cro-Magnon: "The term 'Cro-Magnon' has no formal taxonomic status, since it refers neither to a species or subspecies nor to an archaeological phase or culture. The name is not commonly encountered in modern professional literature in English, since authors prefer to talk more generally of anatomically modern humans. They thus avoid a certain ambiguity in the label 'Cro-Magnon', which is sometimes used to refer to all early moderns in Europe (as opposed to the preceding Neanderthals), and sometimes to refer to a specific human group that can be distinguished from other Upper Paleolithic humans in the region. Nevertheless, the term 'Cro-Magnon' is still very commonly used in popular texts because it makes an obvious distinction with the Neanderthals, and also refers directly to people"

  3. cro-magnon man was homo sapiens - modern man is homo sapiens sapiens.

Cro-magnon is the name of the place in France where his remains were discovered.

They WERE humans, effectively identical to us, but maybe slightly heavier, they had a bigger cranial cavity, but looked pretty much like us.

All species have a zoological name. I would call them human. I would call any species which made cave paintings, musical instruments, and had funereal ceremonies, human.

  4. That is because Cro Magnon were Homo sapiens found in a cave by that name.  Cro Magnon were just among the 1st sapiens found in Europe & their cave paintings entranced the World.

  5. Cro-Magnon is named for the discovery at the Cromagnon caves in southern Frrance. It still is of the genus Homo Sapien Sapien.

  6. Read:

    Ed, Jimmy G and icabod!

    They be havin it right!

    Them Cro mag-whatevers is US!

  7. To *icabodwa* and all you other evolutionists.  I think what *plumerbo* is asking, is, what is the 'brickwall' difference between cro-magnon and us modern "Humans" that prevents you evolutionists labelling Cro-magnon as 'modern humans'.  "Robust.  Larger brain capacity", is that it?

Why the mystery?  And, btw, why different evolutionist accounts of the Cro-magnon fossil find?  i.e.  <www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/humans> states that there was six skeletons discovered on the French site, while 'talkorigins' say there were five.

How can the theory of evolution be based or accepted on this and other flimsy evidence? (I am NOT a creationist, nor any other religionist!).
