Dartmouth College, the elite Ivy League school uses the word "college" after its name, even tho it has graduate programs and schools and offers doctorate degrees. That would make it a "university." The other Ivys and other schools changed the endings on their names to make it appropriate. So why not Dartmouth?

  1. Because it captures the spirit of the school. It is first and foremost an undergraduate institution dedicated to serving that population. There are only a small number of grad students. Dartmouth is proud of it's position as the only ivy with an undergrad focus, it's what's makes it a unique experience among the ivies--almost no TA's and intimate relationships with profs for undergrads not possible at the others.
