Why does France have one of the worlds largest Exclusive Economic Zones?

Question

Just how is that possible that France being a rather small country is able to have control over such a large area of the worlds oceans, when countries such as China, Brazil, Australia and even Canada don't have anywhere near as much as France does?

er, because parts of Canada were once French? dunno about china, etc though...

Wow.....good Q...I am not sure...could be because Canada is mostly French...but I am sure there is alot more involved...politically.

allow France they obviously used an easier way to own parts of the oceans because they used blackmail haha
