the innocent and the righteous, like children, etc; I think it says so in the Bible. One more thing, do you believe in the power of thoughts? Why do tragedies happen then (murders, in the middle of the day, and where you would not expect them, etc)?

  1. America's Deist Founders would disagree completely with you. It was their contention that God gave Man reason so that Man could sort out his own affairs. That is why the Deists were so devoutly believing in the power of Reason--because God gave it to them.

  2. Obviously, if a diety promises to avert tragedies but does not, there are only a few possible reasons.  Either that diety doesn't really consider those murders and so on tragic, it is actually incapable of stopping them for some reason, or it was simply lying to you earlier.  There aren't really any other choices.

Now, there are many apoligists who will take up any of those positions.  They will say that these tragedies are things which help you build character and realize the ephemeral nature of life.  Or they will say that guaranteeing you freedom means allowing you the ability to be destroyed.  But I think they should give more consideration to the third option instead of rejecting it out of hand.  That, I think, is the biggest act of hopeful faith they commit.

"You have to consider the possibility that God doesn't like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. This is not the worst thing that can happen..."
