Why does Great Britain still maintain a monarchy, when the country is mainly run by Parliament?

If Britain has a Parliament to maintain all general affairs in running the country (e.g. taxes, foreign alliances), then why do they still insist on a bloodline to decide who is the authorizer in public matters? Shouldn't the best leader from the people be chosen instead?

  1. Tourism

  2. The country has to have a head of state, whether hereditary or elected.  I think we are just as well off with the royal family, and they don't cost any more than an elected head of state.

The Queen's role nowadays is mainly ceremonial, and she does a very good job.  why replace her with an elected head of state?  do we really want yet more bloody elections in this country?

  3. Because the majority like it and want it that way.You have your system in the insignificant place that you have,we do  not question the way your rathole is run,so you leave our nice country and it's system alone.

  4. Because it is the countries heritage.

Kind of like a symbol of who they are.

    It works so keep it.

Old is better sometimes even in governments.

    = = = = = = = = Okay = + + =+ + =

  5. Although the British Monarch has powers (to disband Parliament, etc.) they are no longer used, and if a monarch tried to use them, he/she would be ridiculed right out of Buckingham Palace.

The Monarch is a figure head--like the American First Lady.  He/she isn't elected to anything, but he/she performs certain tasks for the public good will.

Some people in Britain (and elsewhere) think the Royals are a big waste of taxpayer money and should be done with.  The truth is probably that Royals break-even with all the money they bring in from tourism and tabloid sales.

    We have Britney--they have Bessie.

  6. The Monarch brings in a lot of Tourism. Today its really just for show and tradition, the Royal family has no true power any more. Not like their ancestors who could just do whatever the h**l they wanted.

  7. The monarchy is more of a figurehead that brings tourists there.

  8. Force of habit. They are proud of their Royal family and it has a longstanding tradition they are not likely to give up. Kind of like Americans will never embrace soccer or the metric system.

  9. The Monarchy is a dictatorship with flunkies doing the dirty work.

  10. I guess they are part of the country's history....
