Why does Jeppesen "copy" the charts from the official FAA-charts, and then sells them?

I mean, you get the official charts on websites like www.myairplane.com, for every US-airport, so why would you go to Jeppesen and buy the same charts, or better, why is Jeppesen even doing this?

  1. Jeppesen has been in the charting business since Captain Jeppesen started selling his airport notes to other pilots.  In those days there were few choices in where you could obtain such information.

In the modern world, there are many more choices, and for some applications you might be well served by myairplane.com, etc.  For the professional Jeppesen makes more sense, as there is a lot of "value added" information in their publications.  They even produce custom chart series for airlines and other major users tailored to the users' specifications.

So should you spend money to purchase something freely available it that product meets your needs?  Of course not.  But if your needs grow and you need the extra material added by Jeppesen and, as many pilots do, prefer their format for presenting information, it will be worth the cost.

  2. jeppesen is owned by boeing, so they can do whatever they want.

  3. They are doing this because there is tons of money to be made doing it. And the FAA doesn't make charts. FLIP charts are cumbersome at best and very difficult to read at worst. If you've ever flown for the military you'd know.

  4. Jeppesen adds their own features and approach data tailored for different types of pilots.
