  1. Because it encourages people to return the bottles, cans and glass rather than throw them away.

The states that don't do it, do so because they probably feel it is not the governments business.

  2. Because it encourages people to return the empties for the deposit.

When I was a kid growing up in northern MI in the 60's, we had a 2 cent deposit on bottles, and the ditches were full of them because people would pitch an empty out the car window when they were done with it.  I used to pick up empties and take them to the store for a little extra spending money.  So the deposit was raised to 3 cents, and that helped some.  But when it was raised to 10 cents, people decided that it was worth returning them, rather than throwing them away.  It keeps an easily recycled product out of the waste stream.  Now there is an effort underway to expand the deposit to cover juice and other non-carbonated products.  Other states should copy this, I think.

  3. because they collect .10$ when you buy the bottle

  4. Cause they can't afford 15 cents.

  5. When you buy them you pay an extra $0.10 so when you recycle it you get your money back.  Its to promote recycling instead of just throwing it in the trash.

  6. To stop road side littering.

  7. To help feed it's out of work residences.

  8. Michigan doesn't do it. They have imposed it on business to charge a 10 cent deposit on each bottle that is sold. The 10 cents is refunded when the bottle is returned.

Some states do not interfere with business in this way.
