When Mickey Mouse first appeared in films, he was in black and white, not color. Since his body was black, whenever he moved his hand in front of his body, you could not see it. So they added the white gloves to solve this problem. When they switched to color film, they decided to keep the white gloves.

In early black-and-white animation many animal characters were given simple black bodies which were easier to create. But the facial portions of these animals were drawn in white, to allow for black lines to indicate eyes, nose, and mouth.

To make the hands appear clearly, white gloves were added to some animals such as Mickey in all but the earliest Mickey Mouse cartoons. This allowed the hands to appear clearly when they were in front of Mickey’s black body, without messing around with white ink.

The fifth Mickey Mouse cartoon, “The Opry House”, released on March 28, 1929, was the first cartoon in which Mickey wore gloves and they appear in almost all of Mickey’s subsequent appearances.
