Question:

Why does Miles per Gallon differ in the U.S. and Canada?

I know there is a difference in gallons from a US Gallon to an Imperial Gallon, so does this change the MPG rating of vehicles from Canada to the States? For example, you can look at the MPG on the Toyota Canadian website, and it lists the Corolla S as getting 38/50 (city/highway). But if you check the US website, the Corolla S gets 26/35. Is this just because Canada and US use a different measurement when it comes to gallons?

  1. I see you've figured out the miles and litre thing, good for you. Sadly a lot of people still forget that........

Th thing is that Canadian government testing standards differ from American. That's where the difference is mainly coming from.

There's also two types of gallons, US Gallons and Imperial Gallons. It doesn't say which one they used, so it could be either. Isn't that fun? To types of units under the same practical name. I think we should just all switch to metric... The place where a litre will always be a litre and a kilometer alway a kilometer. None of this US/Imperial Gallon  or Miles/Nautical Mile junk anymore.

  2. You already answered your own question.  An American gallon is not the same volume as a Canadian gallon so of course that is going to change the mileage ratings.  The larger gallon goes farther because there's more gas there.

  3. You have to switch your car to Metric system most vehicles come  with this technology

  4. Because Canada uses the imperial gallon which has 1 extra quart. 5 quarts compared to ours which has 4 quarts to a gallon.

  5. It COULD be the method used to measure MPG. In the U.S., they do it in a lab under controlled conditions with the tires on rollers.

Maybe in Canada they actually go out and drive the car on the highway and measure MPG that way. Don't know for sure.....
