  1. The spot is guaranteed in 2 weeks.

He has to wait 2 weeks because that's when the new rankings come out, the points have to be tabulated and things adjusted.

I think the PTA does all those things, and they don't make new ratings every day!

  2. The ATP #1 player is based on the previous 52 weeks of tennis.

Last year, the Canadian Masters was finished up on August 5, 2007 and the Cincinnati Masters finished on August 13, 2007.  Federer finished 2nd and 1st at those two events.  He earned 850 points at those events.  He will lose the ATP points he won last year the next time the ranking come out.

Nadal will lose 230 points based on his performance at those tourneys last year.  Therefore, he will gain 620 points on Federer which is enough to pass him.

Neither Federer, nor Nadal will gain any points between now and the next time the rankings come out.  Both will be playing in the Olympics.  Therefore Nadal is guaranteed to pass Federer.

  3. Because he didn't win in Cincinnati. If he did win Cincinnati, he would be No.1 tomorrow!

  4. It's because that's when last year's points from Toronto and Cincinatti will be erased. Federer will lose 850, and Nadal will lose about 350. So that 500 point difference will put Nadal in #1. If he had won Cincinnatti, he would not have had to wait.

This year because of the olympics, the schedule has been rearranged. That's why last year's points are taking so long to be deleted.

  5. He has to wait because the points from the Toronto masters cannot yet be added on due to the fact the schedule has been put forward to accomodate the Olympics.

Nadal would of been made the number next week had he won the Cincinnati Masters.

Basically it's all down to the Olympics.
