Why does Ravana take Sita?

Ravana hijacked Sita in revenge of Laxmana's insulting  & jilting his (Ravana's) sister Shoorpanakha.

Although Sita was kept in Ashoka Van under Female guard, Ravana refrained from ''Taking" her against her wishes. After all he was the most learned MahaPandit of  those days, and also a Brahmin.
