Question:

Why does Russia think that Georgia is the aggressor?

I really don't understand Russia's argument. What could little Georgia be doing that is so threatening to Russia so as to warrant the need for invasion. Why wouldn't just shutting down the border and stopping relations fix the problem; why does it have to come down to invasion?

  1. Russia is using this fable as an outright lie, excuse and ploy for their own unsavory and selfish reasons!  In a nutshell, militants (fomented by and including the Russian 'peacekeepers' there) in South Ossetia were attacking the Georgian Gov't and Georgian civilians. It appears that all this behind the scenes prepping for war was orchestrated by the Russian Gov't - as they were unhappy with Georgia. Georgia then responded against the militants and then Russia invaded Georgia.

    Russia/Putin wants to:

    * control Georgia's oil transportation/supply routes from the Caspian Sea and thus control ALL of Europe's energy inputs

    * intimidate Georgia into not joining NATO

    * push Georgia from becoming a true democracy on Russia's border

    * punish Georgia for allying with the US

    * move towards re-creating the USSR

    * add to Putin's disgusting, ill-gotten $40B fortune

    Peace

  2. Georgia is the aggressor! I hate western media now. I watch both Russia Today and news in the US. No one mentions the Georgian first attack on South Osetia ( i dunno if i spelled it right).  It was a massacre of about 1200 innocent citizens. Google Russia today, their are documentations of families fleeing for their lives from Georgia.  Georgia used tanks to mow down women and children, shot and burn everything in their way.  South Osetia had a large amount of Russians btw, correct me if i'm wrong but 90% of South Osetia was Russian?.  Georgian's leader is very effective using the media as a weapon. Most Russian reporters are banned from georgia and their sites have been shut down in Georgia.  No one wants to listen to the Russian side. Russia had the right to intervene and protect their people. NATO even ignores and doesn't respond to the questions about Georgia's actions.

Everyone thinks Russia is the aggressor because they still have the cold war on their mind and thinks Russia is always the bad guy looking for more land to take over.

do the research yourself :) . I like to see the story of both sides in the media, but i'm disgusted by how the western media only sees Georgias side.

  3. in early 1990s after previous invasion of georgean military in those regions, there was a peace treaty between georgia, s. ossetia and abkhasia approved by OSCE. russia was mediator in that treaty. the treaty stated that mixed peacekeeping forces are deployed in the region: abkhaz/ossetians and georgeans on their sides while russia in the middle to keep one from the other and with obligation to take any actions required to stop any military activity by either side against the other.

aug 7 gerogia started a surprise attack on a sleeping city with heavy artillery. if you check anything other than free western media you'll find plenty of pictures and descriptions. this action was a direct breach of the treaty. by the treaty, which was signed by georgia among others, it was obligation put on russia to stop georgians from military actions. plus there were russian peacekeepers (with no heavy weaponry) under siege by heavy armor units and several tens of thousands of civilians under not stopping artillery fire.

so, russia deployed a force 3 times less numerous than total georgean military which retook the city and took artillery positions and air base on georgean territory as per the treaty obligations. then the force withdrew and deployed additional security measures (extra peacekeeping posts) as per cease fire signed by georgia and russia.

why do you think russia is aggressor?

    good luck.

  4. Russia wants the land.  They handed out Russian passports to the people to claim that they were Russian citizens. However, during the Soviet era, people were moved around the provinces like pawns on a chessboard.  Russia would move in amounts of Russians, and move OUT the people living there.  This would destroy any pockets of resistance AND as we see, cause the whole thing to be messy many years later.

  5. Georgia IS the aggressor. They started this by shelling South Ossetia, killing hundreds. Most S. Ossetians have Russian citizenship. There are widespread accusations that 'plucky little Georgia' had begun to ethnically cleanse the area of Ossetians, and would have done so if not for Russian intervention. The Russian response was vastly disproportionate, but they didn't start the war.

I'm not pro-Russia, but these are the facts.
