Why does Sodium Chloride have a high melting point and chlorine have a low melting point?

  1. sodium chloride is and ionic bond that requires more energy to break. ionic bonds need more energy, when u heated it up, ur energizing it. if it was a covalent bond it wouldn't have a high melting point e.g. sugar
