I think it's just logical to start school in January and finish in December (also we don't get summer of) can anyone explain why it's done a different way in the USA and other places?

  1. I think it has to do with when kids would take time off from school to help with farm work and stuff. School didn't start until after the harvest was done. As breaks were added the school year spread out to start earlier and end later, since fewer children have to help their families with crops. It just kind of stuck. I remember in the mid 1990s a bunch of schools in the state where I live when year round, but I"m not sure how many stayed that way.

  2. The USA is in the northern hemisphere and Australia is in the Southern hemisphere. What that means is that we experience summer at different times of the year. In the USA summer starts in June. In Australia summer starts in December.

  3. Arizona schools began in Aug.
