Question:

Why does Tipsarevic only seem to turn up at Grand Slams?

I mean He has done remarkably well at the Majors for the last couple of years but then that is it!!! Why can't he produce his best form at the Masters or tier 2 events?

Ranked 42/43 in the world just doesn't do justice for how talented he is.

In tennis terms 23 is not spring chicken so he really needs to get a move on if he wants to be top 15 where he deserves to be on talent!

Has anyone else wondered the same thing?

Is there any reason for it?

I shall appreciate any contribution, thankyou.

  1. Actually he has played well all season, including those tournaments that are not slams. This week many dont realize that there are just 50-60 contenders, and first round matches arent usual first round  match opponents. His ranking has steadily risen due to his play. However, tournaments like this one where top players take part, he still needs to come up with a win to increase his place in rankings. He should fair well at The Open, at least through first 2-3 rounds. Round 3 has 32 players, so not easy either, but if he can play as he has, which I think he can, he will be fine. Many other players would love to have his record this year. Remember though its harder for those ranked lower, for they have to continually play those ranked higher then them, and to beat those players continuously, isnt easy. Otherwise they wouldnt be ranked where they are.

  2. i admit he is a good player but i don' t think he has the extra stuff to make it as a top 10 or mental consistency but i do believe he is a top 20 player and his ranking does'nt do justice to that , that is why he is a dangerous lurker in the draws especially at grand slams. Maybe Tipsy likes it that way coz he is guaranteed to play a big gun early which motivates him more. But i believe for a guy who thinks alot e.g(interest in dostoevsky novels) he probably gets distracted or loses concentration coz of thinking. Or just lack of motivation. I think looking at him playing against gonzo at wimby a couple of years ago he showed he had a good backhand-forehand but i think it is just mental with him when it comes to pressure. For example when his game is'nt working i don't think he knows how to adjust it during the match in order to counter-attack his opponent weapons but i think he just gets abit tight or does not quite believe he can pull through those big points which decide the winning direction of a match.

IT can be a number of different reasons for such a complex character.

    hope this helped!

  3. I've been following Tipsarevic's progress over many years now and he himself has shown frustration about some of his performances. He also said he really comes through for the big matches, playing on centre court for example was one of his dreams as a kid and winning on there must have topped that! And dispite Roddick obviously not playing his best you cannot take any credit from Tipsy for a fantastic match.

I believe that he needs to become mentally stronger, I looked at his body language in the Toronto match and even at the net for the coin toss his body language just seemed off.

From what I can tell the Moya match yesterday was a tight match, not a white wash. And with Moya's experience I wasn't really expecting Tipsarevic to get though.

They keep refering to Tipsarevic as 'The uop-and-coming Serb' and I think he is still learning. His game is excellent imo, when he finds that back-hand down the line his play becomes a real joy to watch. I think he just needs to grow mentally a bit more. Needs to learn how to encourage himself more than relying on large crowds to help boost him. Maybe that's why he doesn't perform so well at the smaller shows.

Hopefully he'll peak soon, until then I'll travel around to a few more tournaments to give some support!

  4. Yeah, maybe he's kind of like the Williams sisters in that each of their rankings are lower than are supposed to be because they really only put in their best effort at the Slams.  Plus, Tipsarevic looks like he does better against top players, so he probably puts more effort into his playing-like upsetting Roddick at Wimbledon.

  5. To be honest I don't really think he's that talented of a tennis player. He beat a slumping Roddick at Wimbledon, but other than that I don't think he's made much noise at all in any majors or master series. His ranking is where it should be?
