Why does Yahoo groups ask members to 'sign in' to Yahoo!?

I've been trying to set up a group, and when I add a member (myself) at another address, it always wants them to sign in? What if they don't have a yahoo! address? If you want members to sign into the group, how will they know the password?

  1. For anyone to use a Yahoo group, they have to have a Yahoo account. Alternately, once you create the group, there is a listserv type link that you can send to people that they can use to join. For example, it will say, to join, send message to subscribe@groupname.yahoogroups.com. But you can't just sign people up yourself.

  2. Members do not need a Yahoo e-mail address to join a Yahoo Group - any working e-mail address will do (as mentioned in my first Source below).  But members do need a Yahoo ID to access the Group web site.  A Yahoo ID is not the same as a Yahoo e-mail address; it's just a login name used when accessing one's Groups on the Yahoo Groups web site.  To get a Yahoo ID without having or getting a Yahoo e-mail addreess, go to the Yahoo Groups home page ( http://groups.yahoo.com/ ) and click the (small) Sign Up link near the top-middle of the page.  Then follow the directions on the resulting page.

There is no password for any Yahoo Group itself; passwords are associated with Yahoo IDs, not Groups.  Once a member signs in with the password associated with his/her Yahoo ID, he/she doesn't then have to enter another password to get to any of his/her Yahoo Groups.

  3. added members are mailing list members only and do not then have access to the group or it's features. it will ask for you to sign in at the group site however try posting via your e-mail, it'll go through.

inviting members is the best option since it gives the choices of being a mailinglist only member ot linking/ obtaining a yahoo ID
