Why does a PC on the same router have much faster connection than mine?

Our router is in the room with this PC (the one with much faster connection) whereas mine is in the floor above hooked up to the router by a 20m ethernet cable. This computer's connection is significantly faster. Mine really struggles to load images and very often can't load the page at all, and this is with 8 meg broadband. Can this all be explained by the ethernet cable?

  1. No. Unless the cable is faulty or an incorrect type (cross-over instead of straight) it will not affect speed this much. You need to run anti-spyware and anti-virus scans on your machine, and ensure it is not running unwanted background programs. Particularly uninstall any internet optimisers, search assitants, or toolbars, apart from the Google, Yahoo or MSN toolbars, as most of these are absolute spyware int their own right.

  2. What kind of ethernet card are you using? or is it built i to the motherboard? try getting a new ethernet card with a faster connection or get a good lan card
