Question:

Why does a Utopian society fail?

I am working on a project for English, where i depict, through a story, why Utopian societies have failed in the past and in literature, and why they continue to fail. I have had a lot of thoughts on the subject, however I want a universal theme to tie it all together, something simple that can be absorbed by everyone in the audience.

Thanks

  1. Utopian societies are a clouded dream of all humanist and full blown altruist.

There could be no such thing, according to both Drawin and even Biblical works as a perfect state of humanity, unless they were dead.

The biology and mind and nature of a man, will not allow a perfect state to exist, unless they were so blindly ignorant as if a child, and even a child can't be a true peace they have to be controlled and guided. And I would rather be in pain than to be controlled.

Even in the bible, the most perfect creation of God, disobeyed God.

Utopian societies fail, because they contradict the idea of evolution. Not so much 100k years, eyelashes are all gone, but the idea of struggle and morals and evolving emotions. In Utopian societies there is no bliss because there is no sorrow and no free will to understand what you are. All Utopian societies promote and enforce ignorance to create artificial peace which they 'deem' as happiness. This itself can lead to violent revolt, as soon as the people educated themselves.

Also Utopian society's dare to call themselves perfect, perfection in my eyes is impossible through life. There can be no state of absolute peace, if anything I would rather live in a suicidal state than a Utopian one and be perfectly dead.

Every Utopian book I have read of heard about end the same, Don't let it happen to you.

  2. Just talk about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Nothing can be perfect. Also in your essay state that Utopia technically means "no place." It was lost in translation to American literature. Of course you probably think it means "paradise, heaven, and what not." Maybe write about dreams and the parody that you have to wake up. Be creative and go with it man.

  3. Utopia is a perfect society.  Humans are by no means perfect.  The society is set up to fail.  We have free will.  We are not a society like ants or bees, that work for perfection.   Utopia went out the window when Eve ate that apple.  There are a million things that you can go with.  Good Luck!

  4. To put it in simple terms, a Utopian system relies on perfect balance.  But mankind is certainly not a perfect race.

Therefore there will always be an affect to the balance and the resulting Utopian decline will occur gradually becoming more askew.

Chaos Theory will always defeat a Utopia.

  5. Limited resources. Everyone wants everything, but there is a limited number of everything so conflict begin to occur,

  6. Men are inherently evil.

Everyone's definition of Utopia is different.

There needs to be a balance of good and evil to create a sense of harmony, nothing is perfect, perfection is not natural.

  7. because people are imperfect, so say that we can thrive in a perfect inviorment would be a lie. You can set up a ideal society and there will still be some people who will resist it. it is like that one saying, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink.

  8. Not all ofthemhave (assuming you include small communities, too).

But the reason they fail is that they go about it unrealisticallly.

You have to be both realistic in your goals (nothing is ever going to be perfect peace and harmony; there will always be problems and conflicts),and go about achieving your purpose realistically.

  9. Because people are flawed, especially when it comes to the abuse of power.  Those in power in the utopia are corrupted by it and start abusing it, and utopia stops being utopia.

  10. There has NEVER been a  historically proven Utopian society. So, from where does the basis of your question come? From what foundation do you ask your question? Please respond!
