Why does a basketball bounce differently inside a gym than it does outside a cold wintery day?

  1. The basketball is filled with a bunch of tiny molecules. When it is warm, or those molecules are heated up, it makes them want to move more, making the basketball expand, and have a more full feeling to it. When you cool down these molecules, by putting them out in cold weather, they contract and this makes the basketball shrink. This is the same deal with the air in our tires.


  2. The air inside a basket ball contracts (shrinks) in a cold weather. This makes that basktetball act like it does not have enough air in it.
