  1. They are designed to move clockwise.  If they were made to run the other direction, that would be clockwise, because clockwise is defined as the direction the clock hands move.

    It is all artificial.  If a clock were running counterclockwise, I would think I was in a time machine going into the past.


  2. Before there were mechanical clocks, there were sundials. The numbers on the clock face were arranged in the same direction as the numbers on a sundial, and that direction was determined by the apparent daily motion of the sun. If clocks had been invented in Australia they would run in the other direction.
