  1. regular light bulbs generate immense amounts of heat. All this heat is wasted energy because we cant see the IR light. Florescent lights generate light in a different way that does not generate so much waste heat.

  2. *  Use at least 2/3 less energy than standard bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer.

        * Generate 70 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.

    ***However:

There are serious problems which are raised by attempts to ban incandescent bulbs, including concerns over consumer safety, environmental issues (CFLs contain the toxic element mercury), and the emission spectrum of fluorescent lamps.

  3. An incandescent bulb is less efficient to that of a CFL light bulb as most of the energy, about 80 to 90% that is consumed is emitted as heat which is given out into the room. CFLs operate in by emitting an electric current through the gas in the bulb, which requires a reduced amount of energy.

Installing CFLs in your home can reduce your annual electricity bill by 14% and last 6 to 8 times longer than  incandescent bulbs. They are now widely available in many styles and designs for as low as $1.50 a bulb.
