Why does a fist symbolize strength?

Just kind of thought about it. Any ideas?

Symbols are used to convey a message to initiates.The clenched fist means elite control of the masses in the palm of their hand.The communists used it as well as the Black Panthers.

I always thought it symbolizes power, and if it does, that's obvious why.
