most  new homes don't have a classic chimney  . they are made of wood and contractors  hide pipes in them , for example exaust  from  bathroom fans, plumbing vents  etc, also they are still used to vent boilers and furnaces . some people do have real functioning  chimeny that they can burn wood in ,but not very common in newer homes , most people have ventless gas inserts .
