Why does a large cat deposit his p**p outside a very clean litter box?

He backs up, covers it with litter, but misses the box. It is always very clean. What do I do to stop this behavior?

  1. Does the box have one of those dome-like covers over it? If it does he may not fit in there very well. My cat did that at one point. I don't think he's trying to be a brat. If it has the cover try taking it off and see if that works!

    Hope I helped =)

  2. The litter box may be too small. Try investing in a larger litter box or even a covered litter box to help prevent ''over the side'' accidents.

I had 2 large foster cats that we got a Booda litter box for, and it seemed to work quite well for them.

  3. He needs a large, uncovered litter box.  Big cats need big boxes, with lots of room for them to turn around.  If you've got the room, go to a home improvement store and get one of the plastic pans they sell for mixing concrete - they are perfect for large cats.

  4. I bught the Jumbo petmate covered boxes & the large size rollover litter boxes. I adopted a very large cat(Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest cat" mix 4 weeks ago. These were the largest boxes I could find as my other cat pees high & I need a covered box. It sounde like a war was going on in the litter boxes at first as he had trouble fiding the easiest way to go then cover it up. Two times he buried it & it landed outside the box.

I'd recommend you get a large rubbermaid box tall & long enough for him as I'm getting ready to do that as these are the longest biggest litter boxes made, but hard for a big breed cat to use comfortably.

  5. You should make him smell the tray when he wants to poo (push his head to the tray) and then make him dig it with his paw.

Try it. My cat had the same prob but he poos outsise now.

  6. The litter box is probably too small.
