Question:

Why does a liberal German mayor not work with Americans?

People officially tend to address it politely in public, but within some private circles it doesn't come across as nice or cooperative at all, and I am speaking of the relationship in Heidelberg between Americans and mayoress Beate Weber's city government. It isn't a state secret that Americans, who have long been stalwart supporters and good neighbors of Heidelbergers, are planning basically a forced relocation to Wiesbaden for their military forces because of Weber's liberal nonsense and insensitive remarks to the press on occasion regarding relations with the U.S. The mayoress didn't even see fit to attend a session in Washington attended more than a year ago by, I think, ALL other mayors in affected German cities to lobby U.S. Congresspeople to not close installations in Germany, which remain so critical to local economies & employment. Hello! I am not German, but based what I have seen and experienced in or out of the loop my last 13 years here, I would say she should go instead!

  1. "Weber's liberal nonsense" I think your political views are tainting the reality of the situation.  Perhaps try to look at it from a neutral perspective rather than a 'liberals are stupid' one and you'll figure it out.

  2. caffeinjunky not true....Germany has acctual a military base in the USA...in new Mexico and Air Force Base and also rent a part of the sheppard training base in Texas. Germanys Air Force uses these Air bases for training conditions in the US is excellent! Mostly good clear weather and much empty dessert to train for bombings and low attiude flys.

in Addition to that Germany owns an Army base in Canada.

  3. American forces on German soil are hardly good neighbours that contriburte a great deal to the local economy & employment. They are a remnant of occupying forces using German soil for strategic advantage. I wonder how a German Army base would be liked - were it located , let's say in DC ?

I think the Mayor has the courage to express what the poeple feel. Nothing wrong with that.

  4. Not with Americans, but rather the American political people who are in power at the moment.
