Why does a non-country (Palestine) has a seat at the UN, while existing countries (Tibet, Taiwan) don't?

Question

Palestine has had unofficial membership since 1975, and has at least three committees catering to Palestinian desires. Tibet, which was invaded and annexed by China, has no such representation. Nor does Taiwan, whose seat the UN gave to China. And what about the Kurds, who are attacked regularly by Turkey and - until recently - Iraq? Do they not deserve a say in world events?

This is really all about international politics.  China is a powerful country with the fastest growing economy in the world.  Therefore Tibet and Taiwan are not allowed to be part of the U.N. even though they have a historic right to be independent countries.

Palestine, on the other hand, has no historic right to be its own country, but it is politically correct to believe otherwise.  All of the land of Palestine is historically Israel and should be given back.

The problem is that the world is governed by politics and not right and wrong.

Palestine has observership status. So does the Vatican State. Neither even has a vote in the General Assembly.

The Kurds were promised a homeland in the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War One. The post-war government of Turkey vetoed the idea and none of the world powers objected.

Taiwan is deserving of having its membership restored. Tibet is like some U.S. possessions which were acquired as the result of invasions or wars and made into territories or states.

Palestine is a state as it has some form of own goverment

Taiwan is a state which considered till recently itself as the only true Chinese state and did not present a bid for a seat on their own regarding the territory this state controls.

Tibet (autonomous province) is under the control of the PRC (Peoples Rep of China) and as such can´t ask for a seat.

I so agree with you that this situation is untenable. Countries that wield power -- a function of money/fuel and military might--seem to rule the world. Power enables them to advance their own interests in the UN.  Of course, this is unjust.  

The non-country (with no historic origin) also enjoys international support and annually receives billions of dollars in donations with no accountability. It benefits from  unprecedented support granted it by wealthy, powerful nations.

Taiwan and Tibet, on the other hand, were taken over by China, a major world power with vast resources. The UN will not save them.



FYI: Another horrific example of injustice perpetrated by the UN involves the ongoing illegal occupation of West Papua by Indonesia. The Indonesian military apparatus (including, for example, Jayapura military commander Col. Burhanuddin Siagian, indicted for crimes against humanity in East Timor) continues to persecute the ethnic Melanesians. Nearly a third of the native population has "disappeared", yet the UN is silent.    West Papua is still begging for observer status at  the Pacific Islands Forum !

But guess which country is currently a (non-permanent) member of the Security Council for a two-year term?

Oh, politics (this is your answer).

For strategic reasons, when the US recognized the PRC, the gov't agreed to accept the "one china" policy (there is only one china, taiwan is a part of china...).  Taiwan has been unsuccessful in attaining the support necessary for a seat.

The Palestinian territories were successful in their petition due to their media war and the help of the surrounding Arab nations-- although it has only observer status, and thus cannot vote.

For Tibet, see again reasons of China.  Of course they deserve a say-- but the existing power structure is against them.

That's why it's important to try to help in areas such as Tibet which are extremely repressed.  However, as China considers Tibet a part of its territory, any other nation's recognition of Tibet as a seperate entity would be akin to declaring war on China.

Israel is smaller, and hasn't threatened to declare war on anyone who recognizes Palestine-- and in fact is trying v. hard to help establish a Palestinian state next to Israel.

In light of the 2008 Olympics, many of these concerns about China's HR abuses are coming to light.

they are not autonomous states.

if one is involved with the UN, all of them should be.  if one isn't involved, none of them should be.
