In Germany...the rooster's heart and head and right foot was hidden in the house in order to avoid illness and bad luck.

Why, to wake us up, of course! I'm from the south, too. I will have to keep checking to see who has the right answer! My neighbor's rooster used to crow at 3 in the afternoon. I think he trained him to wake him up after his nap.
