Why does a telephone wire coil?

Probably sounds like a stupid question, but I seriously would like someone to explain to me why a telephone wire coils - like what materials are used, and what manufacturing processes allow for this to happen. Thanks!

  1. Quite simply it a short cord that can be extended just by stretching it.


  2. The phone wire is purposely made to coil, so as to keep you from dragging the phone off the wall, or the table.!! It also saves space, when it is coiled up. The original making of the coil, is accomplished by coiling it around a heated pipe which causes it to retain it's coiling..(Then cooled.) The exact plastic, I do not know.
