Why does airplane food always taste bad??

I don't know if it's just me, but whenever I'm traveling I ALWAYS have a hard time eating the food on the airplane. It has this certain taste and smell to it that would differ from if I ate it anywhere else. Do they do something to it specifically?

I cannot resist from always calling in 48 hours early to get a kids meal, regardless of my age. Am I the only one that thinks this??

  1. because the food at the plane is the same as the food in hospitals.

  2. since they only chilled the food in flt and reheat it later, airplane foods are high in preservatives such as MSG(monosodium glutamate) to prevent spoiling. Maybe they taste bad because you've eaten or been served spoiled food!!

  3. It's because of cabin pressure and low humidity.

Try first class next time -- they utilize ingredients and recipes with a higher chance of culinary success in that environment.

  4. It's because of the packaging it's in, and the fact that it's served from the lowest bidding company. Airlines spend so much money already on just getting you into the air and to your destination. It can't spend much more money on things like *edible* airline food.

For the record, though, international flights serve better food.

  5. Preservative, Preservative, Preservative!!!!! Any other questions?

  6. Partly because it is pre-cooked, but mainly because with the thin air at altitude (cabin pressure is equivalent to 6000-8000 feet), your sense of smell is much less effective, which removes a large part of the sensory input of eating.

  7. Ya because it's AIRPLANE food. Not land food, you know? Don't worry it's always like that (even the chips!).
