(Obviously I am aware that baseball has coaches as well, but it is a lesser position to the manager.)

Don't these guys have the same tasks at hand; Game plans, lineups, strategy, player substitutions, conferring with officials, etc.

  1. It's pretty much the same. The Head coach of a baseball team has been called a manager ever since the early 20th century. Out of all of the 4 major sports, baseball is the only sport which allows any coach to come on to the field of play at any moment of the game.

  2. Baseballs manager is called manager because he actually manages the game more than coaches in the other sports.  He all ready has an idea of what hes gonna do that game when hes gonna do it wat player he is gonna use in a certain situation.

  3. He manages the other coaches and strategizes for the game...he's the only person you'll see conferring with the officials and I imagine he has the final say regarding lineups and player changes..
