Why does basil wilt so fast?

When I buy fresh potted basil, it seems like no matter what, the stem turn black at the base and the plant dies within a week or two. And my oregano goes brown in sections until it dies in about the same time. What am I doing wrong in love that a highschool kid stockboy/girl seems to get right while texting friends?

When watering don't let the water splash dirt onto the undersides of the leaves. Water only in the morning so leaves have a chance to dry.

The black stems come from over watering. An over-watered basil will look wilted, tempting you to water them.
