Question:

Why does basil wilt so fast?

When I buy fresh potted basil, it seems like no matter what, the stem turn black at the base and the plant dies within a week or two. And my oregano goes brown in sections until it dies in about the same time. What am I doing wrong in love that a highschool kid stockboy/girl seems to get right while texting friends?

  1. When watering don't let the water splash dirt onto the undersides of the leaves. Water only in the morning so leaves have a chance to dry.

The black stems come from over watering. An over-watered basil will look wilted, tempting you to water them.
