  1. It doesn't matter to single celled organisms, who get energy from one source, but we humans are a complex organism and need different sources of energy, nutrients, minerals, to keep all of our different organs functioning as a whole.

    In nature, loss of diversity in an ecosystem can result in higher levels of extinction, because all multi-celled organisms are dependent on other organisms for their survival, whether it's because they consume the other organisms or because they have a symbiotic/parasitic relationship.
